I - LEGAL UPDATES

The Karnataka High Court upheld the acquittal of an accused under POCSO, ruling that DNA evidence alone, without corroborative testimony, cannot prove guilt. Despite a positive DNA report, the victim and her family denied the offence. The Court stressed that scientific evidence must be supported by reliable oral evidence.
The Chhattisgarh High Court upheld the acquittal of a man accused under POCSO, IPC, and SC/ST Acts, ruling that mere verbal expression (saying “I Love You”) without sexual or caste-based intent does not constitute an offence. The Court found no proof of stalking, sexual intent, or caste motive, and dismissed the State’s appeal.
The Supreme Court, acting on a writ, directed all High Courts and State Governments to construct and maintain inclusive toilets for women, PwDs, and transgender persons. Deeming it a matter of dignity and accessibility, it warned non-compliant High Courts of possible contempt and personal appearance requirements.

Did You Know that Pimpri-Chinchwad, near Pune in Maharashtra, is pioneering disability inclusion? Its Municipal Corporation has launched a comprehensive door-to-door survey in partnership with Divyang Bhavan. This initiative aims to document the population of disabled residents and their needs and accessibility barriers. This survey will be a milestone move, albeit at a small scale, towards addressing a critical data gap in India’s disability community. By understanding what services are accessible or lacking, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation is setting an example for better governance and inclusive policy-making at the local level.

Curious Cat: What is the UDID card, when was it introduced, what are its benefits, and how can I apply for it?

Answer: The UDID (Unique Disability ID) card was launched in 2016 to make life easier for persons with disabilities. It gives you a single ID to access various government benefits like travel concessions, scholarships, healthcare, and job or education reservations without having to carry multiple documents. It also helps avoid repeated disability assessments.

If you or someone you know needs to apply, you can do it easily online.
