Did you know? A 2022 study in South Africa found that adolescent girls (12–18) who stayed in school and received comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) were 24% less likely to be HIV-positive overall (AOR 0.76), and among sexually active girls, the risk dropped by 38% (AOR 0.62). In India, although rigorous outcome data are limited, school-based sexual and reproductive health education has shown remarkable improvements: for instance, in Odisha, awareness of pregnancy and contraception soared from just 20–30% at baseline to 90% post-intervention, and knowledge of HIV/STIs similarly rose from low levels to 90% highlighting how CSE boosts informed decision-making even where large-scale evaluations remain scarce.

Curious Cat: Is there a difference between sex education and sexuality education?
Answer: Yes, there is a difference. According to the UN, sex education often refers narrowly to biological aspects of reproduction and prevention of sexually transmitted infections or pregnancy. In contrast, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), as defined by UNESCO and UNFPA, goes beyond biology to address gender, relationships, consent, rights, diversity, and values of equality and respect. CSE empowers young people with knowledge, attitudes, and skills to make informed decisions, ensuring their health, dignity, and well-being in a broader social context.
