I - LEGAL UPDATES

The Delhi High Court held that addressing a woman as “r***i” amounts to outraging her modesty under Section 509 IPC, as it imputes unchastity and attacks sexual dignity. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma ruled the term is not casual abuse but a degrading slur warranting trial for insulting a woman’s modesty.
The Supreme Court dismissed a plea to recall an 11-year-old rape survivor for cross-examination, stressing that under POCSO, child safety and dignity are paramount. It warned against re-traumatizing survivors or using procedural tactics to dilute justice, upholding conviction and awarding ₹10.5 lakh compensation to affirm constitutional protection of children.
The Delhi High Court held that all recognized schools, including private unaided ones, must provide “reasonable accommodation” under Section 16 of the RPwD Act, 2016. Upholding a single judge’s order, it directed readmission of a child with mild autism, emphasizing inclusive education and mandatory pedagogical measures for learning disabilities.

Did you know? The Self-Respect Movement, launched by social reformer E.V. Ramasamy (Periyar) in 1925, is celebrating 100 years of challenging caste hierarchies, gender inequality, and oppressive social norms in Tamil Nadu. Periyar famously said, “We are fit to think of ‘self-respect’ only when the notion of ‘superior’ and ‘inferior’ caste is banished from our land.” Over these 100 years, the movement has empowered marginalized communities and continues to inspire social justice, equality, and inclusive thinking today.
