I - LEGAL UPDATES

The Delhi High Court quashed a sexual harassment case under Sections 354, 354A, and 354B IPC, highlighting the importance of resolution and accountability. Following a settlement with the complainant, the accused undertook to perform community service at Jama Masjid for two months and contribute to the Delhi Police Welfare Fund. The Court emphasized that such voluntary measures promote reconciliation and ease judicial burden.
The Delhi High Court upheld the conviction of a 21-year-old for raping a 14-year-old girl. It emphasized that minors cannot legally consent to sexual acts. The Court relied on consistent testimony, medical evidence of pregnancy, and statutory presumptions under POCSO to affirm the conviction and the imposed sentence.
The Delhi High Court rejected anticipatory bail for family members in a dowry-linked suicide, observing that persistent cruelty and harassment in the matrimonial home “robs women of their dignity” and can cost lives. Bail was granted to a relative who showed empathy, subject to cooperation with the investigation and restrictions on influencing witnesses.

II - Exploring Intersections

We, at POSHequili, highlight the pervasive and often overlooked issue of sexual harassment in medical settings. Female physicians frequently encounter inappropriate comments, unwanted physical contact, and objectification from patients and colleagues. These incidents are underreported due to fear of retaliation and lack of institutional support. We are calls for systemic changes, including better reporting mechanisms, training programs, and a cultural shift towards zero tolerance for harassment, to ensure a safer and more equitable work environment for women in medicine.

Did you know that the Quit India Movement of 1942, led by Mahatma Gandhi’s powerful call of “Do or Die,” was carried forward with remarkable courage by women freedom fighters who must be remembered and celebrated? Aruna Asaf Ali boldly hoisted the national flag despite police firing, Matangini Hazra, at 73, marched chanting “Vande Mataram” even after being shot, and young Kanaklata Barua, just 17, gave her life carrying the tricolour. Tara Rani Srivastava and Sucheta Kripalani too inspired many. Gandhi’s vision, strengthened by their perseverance, reminds us to honour their courage and sacrifice in India’s independence struggle.

Curious Cat: Why is feminism often misunderstood, and how can we effectively educate the younger generation about its true objectives?

Answer: Feminism is often misinterpreted as being anti-men, but it fundamentally promotes gender equity and challenges systemic inequalities. Misunderstandings stem from media oversimplification, selective narratives, and cultural biases. Feminist-led movements have historically enabled women to run businesses, gain political representation, and influence LGBTQIA+ rights. They have helped reduce female infanticide and encouraged men to speak about mental health and vulnerabilities. To build accurate awareness, structured education programs, evidence-based discussions, and real-world examples of policy and social impact can be introduced in schools and digital platforms, helping youth critically engage with the movement and understand its relevance in achieving inclusive societal progress.
