I - LEGAL UPDATES

The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Union of India and the Bar Council of India on a petition questioning whether the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 applies to women advocates. The petition challenges a July 2025 Bombay High Court ruling that excluded advocates on account of no employer–employee relationship. The case is scheduled for further hearing.
The Delhi High Court has reaffirmed that a minor’s consent has no legal validity under the POCSO Act. In a case involving a 16-year-old survivor who sought quashing of charges after entering a claimed marriage and having a child with the accused, the Court held that such personal circumstances cannot override the statutory bar on sexual acts with minors. The petition was dismissed.

Did you know that India has bagged yet another World Cup triumph? On 23rd November, the Indian women’s team won the first ever Blind Women’s T20 World Cup to be organized. India won by defeating Nepal by seven wickets in the final. The World Cup was hosted in Sri Lanka. India had won against Australia in the semi-finals, and Nepal defeated Pakistan, to square off in the final match. This win stands as yet another testament towards the merits of bolstering diversity and inclusion efforts. When affirmed and given accessible and supportive infrastructures, disabled persons can thrive in their lives, instead of barely existing on the margins.

Curious Cat:
Who created the original rape kit to help survivors report assaults?

Answer: In the 1970s, Marty Goddard, a dedicated volunteer and activist working at a hotline for teenagers, identified a critical barrier faced by rape survivors: the difficulty in collecting and preserving evidence, which often led to victims not being believed or their cases dismissed. To address this, Goddard developed the first rape kit—a standardized, easy-to-use collection of swabs, forms, and envelopes designed to support survivors and improve evidence gathering. This innovation has since been adopted worldwide, transforming how gendered violence is addressed legally and medically.

As we observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, it’s vital to honor activists like Marty Goddard who create accessible redressal systems that empower survivors and challenge systemic barriers. Their quiet but powerful work lays the foundation for justice and amplifies the voices of those impacted by violence, reminding us that activism takes many forms—including practical solutions that save lives and uphold dignity.
