I - LEGAL UPDATES

The Karnataka High Court has directed the State Government to file a comprehensive status report on the implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. The report is expected to detail progress on key compliance requirements including accessibility measures, welfare initiatives, and institutional mechanisms mandated under the law. This order reinforces the need for active and accountable enforcement of disability rights in the State.
A recent judgment has reaffirmed that proceedings under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 are remedial and civil in nature, intended to secure protection and relief for survivors rather than to operate as a criminal prosecution. The Court clarified that while magistrates may use criminal procedure for enforcement, the objective remains safeguarding women’s rights and ensuring timely access to civil remedies under the law.

Here's your weekly food for thought through a Fun Fact or Quiz.

Did You Know that the film “My Brother… Nikhil” (2005), directed by queer Indian filmmaker Onir, was truly ahead of its time in portraying the harsh realities faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals? The story follows a closeted gay swimmer who, who upon discovering he has AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), must navigate deeply inaccessible social and healthcare systems that strip away his basic humanity.

This powerful film highlights the extent of discrimination fueled by homophobia and the widespread misinformation surrounding AIDS and HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). Watching it offers important insights into how stigma and bias can worsen the challenges faced by those living with HIV/AIDS and the LGBTQIA+ community.

Curious Cat:
What does the concept of “grief time” mean, and why is it important to support those experiencing it?

Answer:
“Grief time,” a term coined by Erich Lindemann in the 1940s, refers to the personal, non-linear periods of time that individuals need to process loss, trauma, or significant change at their own pace. Unlike the popular notion of fixed “stages of grief,” grief time recognizes that healing varies widely and is not experienced the same way by everyone.

This concept overlaps with “crip time,” which acknowledges that disabled and chronically ill people experience time and healing differently due to unique challenges. Supporting those in grief time means offering empathy, validating their feelings, and providing safe, nonjudgmental environments—whether through listening, practical help, or professional care—that honor each individual’s healing journey.
