Curious Cat:
What does dynamic disability mean, and how can we support people living with dynamic disabilities?

Answer:
Dynamic disability is a concept coined by disability scholar Sami Schalk to describe disabilities that fluctuate in intensity or presence over time, rather than being constant or static. Unlike traditional views of disability as fixed, dynamic disabilities can vary day-to-day or even within a single day, influenced by factors such as physical health, environment, stress, or energy levels. Examples include chronic illnesses like multiple sclerosis, lupus, or neurodivergences such as bipolar disorder and anxiety, where symptoms or traits and functional abilities may ebb and flow unpredictably.
Supporting individuals with dynamic disabilities means embracing flexibility and understanding, such as offering adaptive work schedules, allowing for rest breaks, providing accessible environments, and fostering open communication to accommodate changing needs.
