Self-care is essential when supporting others, as holding space can be emotionally draining. To sustain this, we must care for ourselves and seek help when needed. Building and nurturing community through regular check-ins promotes collective mental well-being.

I - LEGAL UPDATES

The Patna High Court quashed a juvenile’s conviction under the Arms Act, emphasizing the Juvenile Justice Act’s focus on reform over punishment. The court found inconsistencies in the prosecution’s evidence and noted that the juvenile’s positive social background was overlooked. HC highlighted that institutionalization should be a last resort. The court acquitted the juvenile, underscoring the rehabilitative ethos of juvenile justice.
The Delhi High Court ruled that a mother quitting her job to care for her child is not voluntarily abandoning work and is entitled to maintenance. The court emphasized that such a decision stems from childcare responsibilities, not financial neglect, and directed the husband to continue interim support.
The Rajasthan High Court ruled that a mother’s name in a child’s academic records is integral to the child’s legal and emotional identity. The court emphasized that a mother’s contribution to a child’s life is unparalleled and her name should be included in educational documents.
The Delhi High Court has directed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to expedite the formulation of guidelines mandating accessibility features—such as audio descriptions, closed captioning, and subtitles—for OTT platforms. This move aims to ensure equal access to digital content for persons with disabilities, in compliance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

II - Exploring Intersections

Workplaces can support BPD by raising awareness through campaigns, implementing anti-discrimination policies, and providing accommodations like mental health breaks, counseling, and mentorship. Training on emotional regulation, anonymous storytelling, and ongoing education fosters empathy and inclusion. Interactive activities and webinars further promote understanding and create supportive, neuro-affirmative environments.

Here's your weekly food for thought through a Fun Fact or Quiz.

Did You Know about the Gender Sleep Gap? A 2017 survey revealed that 40% women are more likely to experience poor quality of sleep, when compared to men. This is not due to just bad mental health but societal inequities.

Largely accepted gender roles dictate that women bear the brunt of care work. It has been noticed that in households of heterosexual couples with children, the women are expected to be the primary parent. They are expected to be available to care for their children at all hours, even when they are working professionals. This inequity in gender roles leads to women having to stay alert even at night, and leads to poor sleep quality.

Curious Cat: What is Tokophobia and what can be supportive for those dealing with it?

Answer: Tokophobia refers to the fear of being pregnant and giving birth. Severe traits might manifest as insomnia, nightmares, panic attacks, or prolonged anxiety and depression.

Childbirth and pregnancy takes a major toll on the physical, emotional, social and financial aspects of a person’s life. Feeling anxiety around these events is a normal response.

Support can come in the form of social groups. Connecting such persons with a larger group of pregrant persons or those with similar experiences can be really affirming. Professional therapeutic intervention can also be sought to further support those dealing with tokophobia.
