I - LEGAL UPDATES

The Calcutta High Court ruled that mere harassment or abuse at the workplace does not constitute outraging a woman’s modesty under Section 509 IPC unless essential ingredients like intent and gestures are proven. Since no specific acts insulting modesty were established, the court quashed the criminal proceedings.
The Himachal Pradesh High Court granted pre-arrest bail to an industrialist accused under Sections 221, 224, 351(2), and 78 of BNS, 2023. It held that merely taking photographs without repeated contact does not amount to stalking under Section 78. Custodial interrogation was deemed unnecessary; investigation may continue independently.
The Karnataka High Court held that the POCSO Act is gender neutral and applies equally to men and women. Dismissing a woman’s plea to quash an FIR for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy, the Court ruled delay in filing cannot negate charges and rejected stereotypes of passive female participation

Did you know that the famous actor Anthony Hopkins, renowned for iconic roles like Hannibal Lecter, was diagnosed with autism in his 70s?

Throughout his life, he experienced traits such as deep focus, challenges with social cues, obsessive thinking, and a strong need for routine. After his diagnosis, these traits finally made sense to him. Hopkins has publicly shared how autism shaped his creative process, allowing him to deeply connect with complex characters and view the world uniquely—calling it a “great gift.” Late-diagnosed autistic individuals often face barriers due to inaccessible systems. Raising awareness and destigmatizing autism is essential to create more inclusive environments for everyone.

Curious Cat: How have India’s laws on attempted suicide evolved from IPC to the Mental Healthcare Act to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and what are the relevant sections?

Answer: Earlier, Section 309 of the IPC criminalized attempted suicide, punishable with imprisonment or fine. The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 (Section 115) decriminalized it, presuming severe stress and mandating care unless proven otherwise. Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (Section 226), attempt to suicide is punishable only when made to obstruct justice or influence a public servant. Thus, India shifted from punishment to a mental health–centric, compassionate approach, limiting criminality to cases of misuse. This evolution reflects progressive efforts to reduce stigma around mental health.
