I - LEGAL UPDATES

The Delhi High Court held that exoneration in a POSH enquiry does not bar criminal prosecution, as departmental proceedings and criminal trials serve distinct purposes. Observing that workplace harassment persists due to power dynamics, the Court ruled that a complainant’s testimony alone can sustain charges and dismissed the petitioner’s plea.
The Madras High Court directed authorities to permit a disabled NEET PG 2024 candidate, who lost an arm in an accident, to attend NEET PG 2025-26 counselling based on his earlier rank. The Court held he should be considered for admission to eight postgraduate courses deemed suitable for his condition.
The Allahabad High Court criticized the UP Horticulture Director for again rejecting a woman employee’s maternity leave citing a two-year gap rule, despite earlier quashing such orders. Calling the act contemptuous, the Court summoned the Director to personally explain why proceedings under the Contempt of Courts Act should not be initiated.

II - Exploring Intersections

On World Suicide Prevention Day, we reflect on the Supreme Court of India’s landmark July 25, 2025 judgment, affirming mental health as part of the Right to Life under Article 21 of the Constitution of India—and mandating institutional accountability in educational spaces.

Did you know? India’s fertility patterns are undergoing a major shift. The country’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) dropped to 1.9 in 2023, with 18 states and union territories now below the replacement level of 2.1. Bihar reported the highest fertility at 2.8, while Delhi recorded the lowest at 1.2. The Crude Birth Rate also fell to 18.4, alongside a decline in infant mortality to 25 per 1,000 live births. Despite these gains, challenges remain—India’s sex ratio at birth is skewed at 917 girls per 1,000 boys, highlighting persistent gender imbalance even as population growth slows.

Curious Cat:
Why are suicide rates disproportionately high among autistic individuals, and what can be done to address this issue?

Answer:
Research by Bournemouth and Cambridge universities reveals that 1 in 4 autistic adults have attempted suicide, compared to 1 in 37 non-autistic adults. Contributing factors include early-life challenges such as bullying, social exclusion, peer pressure to ‘mask’ autistic traits, and limited access to timely healthcare and diagnosis.

Neurodivergent activists emphasize the need for collective social change—believing and affirming autistic experiences, improving access to social care and benefits, speeding up autism assessments with inclusive criteria, providing clear post-diagnostic support plans, training professionals in autism awareness, and establishing trauma-informed support systems. These measures are essential to create safer, more supportive environments and reduce suicide risks among autistic individuals.
