Did you know? The Self-Respect Movement, launched by social reformer E.V. Ramasamy (Periyar) in 1925, is celebrating 100 years of challenging caste hierarchies, gender inequality, and oppressive social norms in Tamil Nadu. Periyar famously said, “We are fit to think of ‘self-respect’ only when the notion of ‘superior’ and ‘inferior’ caste is banished from our land.” Over these 100 years, the movement has empowered marginalized communities and continues to inspire social justice, equality, and inclusive thinking today.

Staying aware of human rights issues empowers individuals and communities to:
– Advocate effectively for justice, equality, and dignity for all.

– Promote inclusivity by understanding diverse experiences and needs, including disability rights and LGBTQIA+ advocacy.
– Support systemic change by holding institutions accountable and influencing policy.
