I - LEGAL UPDATES

The Additional Sessions Court, Nashik, rejected the bail application of an Internal Committee member accused of failing to act on repeated workplace sexual harassment complaints. The Court held that allegations of discouraging the complainant and neglecting statutory duties under the POSH framework disclosed prima facie material of possible abetment. Given the ongoing investigation and risk of influencing witnesses, bail was denied.
The Madras High Court quashed POCSO proceedings after the victim stated before the Magistrate and child counsellors that the complaint had been lodged under external influence. Relying on the victim’s exculpatory statements and counselling assessment, the Court found the prosecution fundamentally unreliable and held that continuation of proceedings would amount to an abuse of process, while also directing rehabilitation and welfare measures for the victim.

Here's your weekly food for thought through a Fun Fact or Quiz.

Did you know that a powerful women’s rights campaign in Germany is drawing stark attention to the lasting impact of sexual harassment? Terres Des Femmes, a prominent women’s rights organization, placed large white placards near three nude female bronze statues in Munich, Bremen, and Berlin. These statues, whose busts had become visibly brighter from years of being touched by passers-by, now bear the message: “Sexual harassment leaves its mark.” This installation, part of the “Unsilence the Violence” campaign, vividly illustrates how unwanted touching, even when dismissed as harmless, leaves visible traces in public spaces, underscoring the urgent need to stop treating harassment as a joke or entitlement.

The campaign highlights a sobering reality: according to Terre Des Femmes, two out of three women in Germany experience sexual harassment. The installations serve as a powerful visual reminder that these actions have consequences, and that the normalization of such behavior must cease. It’s a crucial call to action, emphasizing that harassment is never acceptable and that its effects are real and lasting.

Curious Cat:
What are some barriers women and menstruators face in accessing menstrual hygiene?

Answer:
Even today, in many developing countries, understanding and awareness surrounding menstruation remain significantly low, creating substantial barriers for women and menstruators from underprivileged backgrounds. A primary obstacle is sociocultural stigma, which renders menstruation a taboo topic in rural areas, effectively cutting off access to vital awareness and education. Furthermore, many individuals cannot afford or access clean, safe menstrual hygiene products, leading to the use of unhygienic alternatives with severe health consequences. This lack of access to both products and clean facilities, such as toilets, is a significant reason why many teenage girls and menstruators drop out of school, hindering their educational progress. Compounding these issues is a critical lack of awareness regarding medical complications related to menstrual health, like endometriosis or PMOS, leading to many conditions going undiagnosed and untreated.
