~ Spotlighting Landmark Judgments since passing of the Law!

I - LEGAL UPDATES

The Supreme Court set aside the conviction of Charming Rupon under Section 6 of the POCSO Act, holding that the prosecution failed to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt. The victim and her cousin could not identify the appellant in court, while material inconsistencies, delayed FIR registration, non-examination of a crucial schoolteacher, and denial of effective cross-examination weakened the case. The Court found the alibi evidence insufficiently considered and ordered acquittal and immediate release, unless required in another case.
In suo motu proceedings concerning recent rape incidents in Delhi NCR, the Supreme Court directed stronger preventive policing and public-safety measures. It ordered enhanced beat patrolling, strict verification of public-transport drivers, better integration of vehicle-tracking systems with emergency response, and clearer SOS protocols. Delhi Police must report on Shishtachar Squads, complainant protection, confidentiality and specialised training. The Court stressed that existing safeguards must operate effectively on the ground and remain lawful and accountable. Compliance reports were directed, and proceedings continue.

II - Exploring Intersections

Internal Committee members support others through sensitive POSH processes, but who supports them? This World Mental Health Day, Equilibrio Advisory invites current and former IC members to share their experiences through our anonymous survey, helping us understand their mental health needs and support systems. Take the survey.

Here's your weekly food for thought through a Fun Fact or Quiz.

Did you know that the introduction of cable television in rural India significantly shifted social norms regarding gender equality? In a landmark Harvard study, economists Robert Jensen and Emily Oster analyzed 180 villages between 2001 and 2003, tracking the impact of popular serials like “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi”. As women engaged with these narratives, where the female lead was educated and took all household decisions and even remarried after being widowed, their responses to surveys evolved rapidly; they became less tolerant of domestic violence, felt less pressure to prefer sons, and claimed greater autonomy in traveling to markets.
Researchers concluded that this phenomenon, known as social learning, allowed television to act as a catalyst for change. The shift was so profound that exposure to these shows had an impact comparable to five and a half years of additional schooling. By normalizing conversations between spouses, media became a tool for psychological empowerment, proving that accessible content can bridge systemic gaps and foster dignity within traditional settings.

Curious Cat:
How does choosing queer joy serve as a powerful form of systemic resistance?

Answer:
In a world that often targets LGBTQIA+ communities with stigma, exclusion and even violence, queer joy is a radical refusal to be defined by struggle. When individuals actively cultivate happiness, community, and authenticity, they dismantle the narrative that queer existence is inherently synonymous with tragedy. This joy acts as a vital survival strategy, building psychological safety and communal resilience against systemic inequities. By celebrating their lives and finding strength in shared identities, the community reclaims their autonomy and refuse to shrink for the comfort of others. Prioritizing joy is not an act of ignorance toward the challenges they face. Rather, it is a formidable tool for social justice, proving that the capacity for love and belonging remains unbreakable despite external efforts to silence marginalized queer and trans voices.
